WHAT'S YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON AGING: YOUR APPROACH

Writer: Marian MillsMarian Mills

The concept of age can be both liberating and intimidating. Embracing the physical changes, the wrinkles that tell stories, and the wisdom that comes with each passing year can be a beautiful experience IF we allow it to be.

#Aging isn't just about counting the years but about the wealth of experiences accumulated along the way. Some would say with age comes a treasure trove of lessons learned, mistakes made, and triumphs celebrated. The lived stories shape us into the individuals we are today. It's akin to a library filled with chapters of laughter, tears, love, and growth.

It's only fair to acknowledge that aging is not always smooth sailing. There are moments of uncertainty, #health concerns, and emotional challenges that come with the territory. Embracing the journey also means navigating these ups and downs with resilience, grace, and an open heart.

I recently reported a concern I had to my doctor, and she stated that it was an "unfortunate normal part of aging." I told her it's not unfortunate, it's a blessing to experience it. Aging is a natural part of life. But let's be honest, some of the things we deal with as we age are a direct reflection of what we did or didn't do when we were younger, and that's okay. The normal wear and tear on our joints are to be expected but what about those aches/pains we ignored because we were denied time off or didn't want to miss work and now it's back...and has now caused more injury.

COMMON SIGNS OF AGING

For many, one of the first visible signs of aging is the appearance of silver strands amidst a sea of color. While society may #perceive gray hair as a symbol of aging, I see it as nature's way of painting us with streaks of wisdom. The beauty of silver strands lies in the stories they hold, the experiences they signify, and the privilege of growing old gracefully.

Of course, the signs of aging don't evolve in any particular order, but some other visible signs you may notice are crow's feet, fine lines and wrinkles on your face, neck or hands. After turning 50, I noticed that my eyebrows and eye lashes have thinned out and are not as full as they used to be.

CHERISHING EVERYDAY MOMENTS

Amidst the complexities of aging, don't forget to cherish the everyday moments that often go unnoticed. I'm a big believer in appreciating the simple things in life. Whether it's savoring a warm cup of tea, watching the sunset, or sharing a laugh with loved ones or a stranger. These simple pleasures serve as reminders of the beauty in the present moment. I think that aging teaches us to slow down, appreciate the small joys, and find meaning in the things we may have ignored when we were younger.

I was diagnosed with what I felt was a devastating diagnosis in my early 20's. I suffered from excruciating, debilitating pain, even with the slightest movement. This caused me to worry about how this would impact my life as I got older. My 20-something-year old mind thought if this is a struggle now, I will probably be in a wheelchair by the time I'm 50! I started looking at things different. This is why I started cherishing little, everyday moments, we never know what life has in store for us.

EMBRACING THE UNKNOWN

At some point as we grow older, we begin to think about what we could have or should have done differently. We may even begin to think of our own demise. Embracing the uncertainties that come with aging requires courage, faith, and a willingness to embrace change, knowing that each moment holds the potential for growth and transformation.

Remember, it's not the wrinkles and gray hair that define us. It's not the increased aches and pains that may come but the stories and wisdom etched in our hearts that truly reflect our journey through life. Aging is like a badge of honor, a testament to the resilience and beauty that come with growing older. Let's celebrate the present moment, cherish the memories, and look forward to the adventures that await us on the road ahead.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO REVERSE AGING

As stated earlier, as we age, we begin to think about the things we did or didn't do when we were younger that may attribute to some of the signs of aging, we are dealing with now. One of the first "lines" of defense that we may start out with is a retinol cream, sunscreen or an #overnightcream to help revive our skin while we sleep. Aging is a natural part of life. When we are young, we can't wait to become an adult and hit certain milestones for one reason or another, for example, when we were 18, we couldn't wait to be 21. Isn't it funny how around our 30's and sometimes younger, we are already trying to stop or at least slow the aging process with creams, #injections, or #supplements. We can't stop or reverse aging, but we can actively take steps to age as healthy as we can.

HELPFUL TIPS

1. Fuel Your Body

The cornerstone of healthy aging begins with nourishing your body with the right nutrients. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides the essential building blocks for optimal well-being. Food is fuel, so use it to energize your body.

2. Stay Active, Stay Youthful

Physical activity is key to maintaining strength, flexibility, and overall mobility as you age. Include a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and activities like yoga or Pilates to keep your body in top condition. Regular exercise not only boosts physical health but also enhances mental clarity and emotional well-being. Take a walk outside, trees provide oxygen, and the Vitamin D is good for you too.

3. Prioritize Sleep

Quality sleep is often underestimated but plays a pivotal role in the aging process. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night to allow your body to repair and rejuvenate. If this is difficult to attain, aim for at least 5-6 hours and get a nap in when you can. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, create a comfortable sleep environment, and prioritize quality rest to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day.

4. Mind Matters: Cultivate Mental Well-being

Maintaining mental health is important at any age. Our #mentalhealth can be healthy or unhealthy due to stress, trauma, or environmental issues, just to name a few. Some people may have a hard time adjusting to the changes associated with aging, i.e. the changes in their looks, abilities, body functions or new physical and/or health issues. Having a healthy perspective about aging can reduce the probability of any long-term mental health challenges like #depression or #anxiety.

  • If a person constantly focuses on how different things were when they were younger and speak about aging as if it's a bad thing; they may have some mental health challenges dealing with the aging process.

  • If they continue to have a negative outlook on the developing changes in themselves, they may need to seek professional help.

  • If a person takes notice of the changes that have taken place due to aging, the good and the bad, and then embrace where they are now. They have a better chance of aging without major changes in their mental health related to their perception on aging.

Aging well involves nurturing your mental health just as much as your physical health. Engage in activities that challenge your brain such as puzzles, learning a new skill, or pursuing hobbies that stimulate creativity. Stay socially connected with friends, family, and colleagues to maintain a sense of community and belonging.

5. Invest In You: #SelfCare

In the hustle and bustle of professional life, it's crucial to carve out time for self-care. Whether it's a relaxing bath, meditation, or enjoying a good book, prioritize activities that nourish your soul and bring joy. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity for a fulfilling and balanced life.

6. Age-Defying Sun Protection: Daily Essential

Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays is a non-negotiable step in the fight against premature aging. Integrate sunscreen into your daily skincare routine (remember the sun is still shining on a cloudy day), wear protective clothing and accessories, and seek shade during peak sun hours to safeguard your skin and maintain a youthful glow.

7. Regular Health Check-ups

Routine health check-ups are paramount in maintaining your well-being and addressing any potential concerns early on. Stay proactive about your health by scheduling regular screenings, consultations with healthcare providers, and addressing any health issues promptly and be honest to stay ahead of the curve and maintain optimal health.

IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

Remember, a healthy lifestyle is a journey, not a destination, so strive to incorporate these practices into your daily routine gradually. By prioritizing self-care, staying active, nourishing your body, and cultivating a positive mindset, you can navigate the aging process with grace and vitality.
